Most patients when they hear the words “root canal” automatically think of a painful procedure. Many years ago, that may have been the case; however, now with advancements in modern technology and general anesthetics, root canals can in fact be a painless procedure. There are several misconceptions and myths about root canals that force people to avoid getting this treatment. Here at TeethNow, we can assure you that you are in the best hands and will undergo a painless procedure.
What Is A Root Canal Procedure?
The goal of root canal therapy is to save a tooth that is extremely infected. Root canal therapy is recommended when the pulp (the soft tissue deep inside the root canal) becomes infected or inflamed. The pulp can become infected by bacteria due to an injury or because of a severe cavity that was left untreated.
There are several indicators that show you may need a root canal. Signs to look out for include:
- Immense pain. Serious teeth pain felt when eating or when pressure is applied to the infected area.
- Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold. Having sensitive teeth is common, however, if the sensitivity is prolonged even after the food is removed, it may be a sign of needing a root canal.
- Discoloration of the tooth. A greyish/blackish discoloration of the tooth may be caused by an infection of the pulp.
- Tenderness or swelling in the gums. A serious infection can cause swelling or tenderness in the gum to touch or when pressure is applied.
- Drainage. Discharge from the root of the tooth is a common sign of infected pulp.
In some cases, there are no symptoms that indicate you may need a root canal; that is why regular dental checkups are important. During a regular dental check up, your teeth and surrounding gum and bone are evaluated for any signs of infection or periodontal disease.
What To Expect During A Root Canal
Now, with all of the stories you have probably heard and read about root canal procedures, you’re probably wondering if they are actually true. It is common to hear horror stories of pain and discomfort that is felt during the procedure. Actually, the exact opposite is true. The pain felt isn’t from the procedure itself, it is from the infection in the tooth. The procedure itself is painless. A local anesthetic is used to numb the tooth and the surrounding area, therefore, no pain or discomfort will be felt.
Here is what to expect during a root canal procedure:
- Once the local anesthetic is administered, very small tools, such as a drill, are utilized to access the inside of the tooth by creating an opening at the bottom. After access to the root is available, the damaged and diseased pulp from the inside of the tooth is removed using very small files. The files are then used to reshape the inside and root of the tooth.
- After the inside of the tooth and root canal is completely cleaned out and dried, the opening of the tooth will be covered with a temporary filling, made with rubber-like material called gutta percha.
- Finally, the treatment will be finished with a permanent crown placed on top of the tooth.
